Recognizing Racist Stereotypes in U.S. Media | by Suzane Jardim | Medium

Jim Crow represents a long stretch of time in our country’s post-Civil War history, yet as this week’s readings show, although Jim Crow might be officially ended, there are legacies from the era.  In particular, this week’s readings raise the issue of how stereotypes about African-Americans that were born out of slavery and the Jim Crow periods persist even today in 2020.  Reflect on this week’s readings by answering the following:

1. What does it say about race/racism in the U.S. that stereotypes from the 1800s and 1900s continue to shape the way African Americans are portrayed in the contemporary period?

2. Do you think it is dangerous for these stereotypes to persist as a legacy of Jim Crow?  How will these stereotypes, many that were formed well over a century ago, be erased?  Or, is that not something you think will happen?
