 Topic 5 DQ 1

In the United States, the use of complementary alternative medicine (CAM) that uses both traditional treatments with nontraditional is becoming popular and accepted (Lavretsky, 2017). Non-traditional methods aim to incorporate natural remedies in nutrition, either/combination of psychological and physical, which both aims for mind and body practices such as massages, acupuncture, exercise, meditation, and yoga (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2021). Compared with modern medicine, which is accustomed to western traditional methods like taking antibiotics, non-traditional ways of using nutrition treatments include herbal medicine, probiotics, and special diets. One of the reasons why nurses should be culturally aware about patient’s practices and beliefs is so proper patient education applies incorporating patient’s preferences. Non-traditional ways are common with the minorities and immigrants in the US but nowadays, integrative health is bringing tradition and non-traditional ways together to achieve better patient outcomes (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2021).

Using the NIH website, how would you describe CAM and the typical person who uses CAM?
